Utawarerumono ZAN 2 is the second installment of the action RPG spin-off from the Aquaplus series. The original series started in 2002 as a Visual Novel and Tactical RPG developed by the Leaf (Prelude to the Fallen) team. It takes us to a fantasy world heavily inspired by the history of the indigenous Ainu ethnic group. The ZAN series offers a condensed version in a hack & slash style.

Specifically, it follows the story of Haku in Mask of Deception. The first ZAN was released exclusively in Japan in 2018, and now it’s finally coming globally to PC. Utawarerumono ZAN 2: Sequel Announced for the West

With October kicking off, we have the launch of Utawarerumono ZAN at the end of the month in the West. But the team at Shiravune and DMM have hit us with some unexpected news. They’ve announced the confirmation of an English localization for the direct sequel, ZAN 2. This news came straight from the team on September 30, 2025.

This time, it’s the first English localization of Haku’s second adventure. This chapter is based on Mask of Truth, whereas the first was based on Mask of Deception. It’s bringing lots of new stuff in terms of story and content, as well as new features and modes. It’s coming to PC with a release date yet to be determined.

What Utawarerumono ZAN 2 has to offer

As mentioned, ZAN 2 is the direct sequel to the first spin-off of the famous fantasy series by Aquaplus. This time, it’s adapting the second chapter of the hybrid Visual Novel and turn-based tactical RPG, Mask of Truth. This installment brings some cool new features, including:

• Improved Gameplay: With a big improvement to the hack & slash gameplay experience, similar to classic musou games. It also introduces the new Skill Board System, allowing you to assign points earned during the adventure, plus new interactions, character upgrades, and much more.

• Extended Story: Adapting the story of Mask of Truth, but also adding new interactions and fully voiced stories. Explore over 20 characters in a whopping 50+ missions packed with action and detail.

• Co-op: For the first time, you can tackle the entire experience in co-op with a friend. The Dream Arena mode lets you take on new scenarios with challenges and enemies beyond the main story.

An interesting note about ZAN 2 is that this is the first English localization for the 2021 title. While the first ZAN was localized by NISA in 2019, it was only on PS4. However, this localization seems to be coming only to PC, given the licensing limitations and the main PC focus of Shiravune and DMM.

This is fantastic news for big fans of Utawarerumono, especially the Action RPG spin-off series. You’ll get to play ZAN 2 for the first time localized in English, although it seems to be PC-only. The release date is still to be confirmed, but it will potentially see the light of day in 2026. This is likely to make room for the launch of the first ZAN on PC on October 27, 2025.
