Blast from the past ⏳⏪🎉 – Official Blog

In 2025, we’re celebrating a major milestone—25 years of geocaching! To mark this special anniversary, we introduced a new hiding theme per quarter to celebrate geocaches published in 2025. Every three months, we feature geocaches from the previous quarter’s theme on the Geocaching Blog and social media.

Our third theme, hidden gems, was a shining success! We loved seeing all the ways you, the community, interpreted the theme. All nominations were polished to perfection, and we are excited to keep the spirit going by sharing some inspiration for the last hiding theme.

The fourth theme: Blast from the past ⏳⏪🎉 (25 Years of Geocaching)
Geocaching is celebrating 25 years this year! Over the last two and a half decades, we’ve made some great memories. Now, we’re asking you to get sentimental and hide some nostalgic geocaches that celebrate the past.

There are countless possibilities for what you can attach a container to, place a container under, or use to make a geocache. Let your imagination run wild; there are many caches that can fit this criteria, but be sure to follow the geocache hiding guidelines.

Ways to participate:

  • Hide a geocache that fits the Blast from the Past theme.
Between October 1 and December 5, 2025, nominate your geocache by completing this form.
  • Find a geocache with a hidden gem theme.

Post photos and tag @geocaching. Use the hashtag #GeoHT25 for a chance to be featured on our Instagram Stories.

💡 Examples to inspire:

  • Geocaches hidden in containers that evoke a feeling of nostalgia.
  • Caches containing VHS tapes, cassettes, polaroids, arcade tokens, keychains, and other ‘the good old days’-type SWAG.
  • Geocaches hidden in locations that are known for being old, historic landmarks, or have a rich history.
  • Classic movie or music-inspired geocaches.
  • Time capsule geocaches.
  • Geocaches that celebrate 25 years of geocaching.
  • Log sheets inspired by yearbooks, polaroids, newspapers, phone books, or postcards.

A land before FaceTime? We call that a throwback—some others might say prehistoric! Not only does this geocache feature a landline cable phone and an extinct friend, but there are even posters on the wall featuring some classic movies. Did someone say disco? Image by Team Poston.

A lovely tribute to 25 years of geocaching! What a journey; here’s to 25 more! Image by OscarPangea.

Hopefully, this geocache takes you back to the good old days before the internet. Upon finding and unlocking the cache container, a newspaper box, you are invited to play the classic game of Sorry!®. This cache is part of a whole series, consisting of 5 caches, inspired by classic boardgames. Sorry, not sorry! Images by ehatch and pinkmonkey2.

This geocache is located outside of the oldest phone booth. It’s 465 years old, to be exact. What a historic treasure! Image by The A-Team.

This EarthCache features orthoceratites, a type of fossil often found in limestone. What’s even more interesting, it’s the floor of the Linköping Cathedral in Östergötland, Sweden. Image by pinkunicorn.

Nothing screams nostalgia more than garage sales and vintage Volkswagen cars. Image by Ro8.

Are you feeling the nostalgia like we are? Only those born in the 90s and before will get this one. Images by NarutoSempai and nillob.

We have to include a Pac-Man®-themed gadget cache, a classic! And of course, it’s in Gilby, North Dakota. Images by Lacknothing and LandlockedPirateFam.

Here’s a 2-in-1 blast from the past. This geocache is the famous TARDIS® call box from Dr. Who®. If you’re lucky enough, the nearby homeowner may even invite you to see another time machine: the famous DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future® and other memorabilia! If Volkswagen bugs always give you that blast from the past feeling, we’re right there with you. What a groovy geocache! Image by go-purdue.

We can’t wait to see the creative caches you share this quarter!
