We’re kicking off our 2026 Geocache of the Week series with a twist, quite literally!

History, craftsmanship, and geocaching are spun together at Danke Prora 2013 (GC47NWY).

As its name suggests, Danke Prora 2013 (GC47NWY) has been turning heads since its debut in 2013, created to honor the first-ever Mega Event (GC44477) at Prora on the island of Rügen, Germany. And what a fitting location for a large Event; the massive Colossus of Prora stretches nearly 3 miles (4.5 kilometers) along the shoreline. Built during World War II but never completed, the largely empty structure remains a stark reminder of its past and provides a memorable setting for this geocache.

Just outside sits an ordinary metal sign with an emblem depicting Rügen’s rugged outline. But this sign is more than meets the eye; It’s a geocache in disguise! Read the cache page carefully to discover this cache’s secrets. With a simple twist, the emblem opens to reveal a hidden compartment, and inside it, the geocache container.

The cache owner, ruegenspass.eu, a professional metalworker and construction manager, designed and built the cache by hand. Like all of his creations, it began as an idea, took shape on paper, and was then carefully brought to life with the help of his wife, Grit.

For ruegenspass.eu and Grit, geocaching is about more than finding caches. They love exploring remarkable locations across different countries, meeting kind and interesting people, and creating caches that bring joy to others.

When the Mega Event organizing team asked them to design a special cache for the Event, they saw it as an opportunity to give something back to the community. The cache was published as a heartfelt thank you, and every detail reflects their goal of making each cache unique, engaging, and fun to find.
