A long overdue Classic mode is finally arriving on League of Legends. After a series of leaks and years of asking for it, Riot Games officially teased that League Classic is real. And thanks to dataminers, there are a few things already revealed about the mode.
League of Legends Is Finally Getting a Classic Mode
The gaming world loves a good trip down memory lane especially when it comes to the titles that defined a generation. For years, players have watched other massive multiplayer games successfully revive their original eras for nostalgic fanbases.
World of Warcraft has its own classic version and Overwatch treated its fans to a limited-time nostalgia trip in 2024, so League of Legends players have naturally been clamoring for the same treatment.
Skepticism ran high when early leaks about a classic mode started surfacing but those doubts were put to rest by a recent Dev Update video from Riot Games. While it’s not a full formal announcement, the message was clear, League Classic is real. Riot is saving the major details for the Mid-Season Invitational as more information will drop during the MSI tournament finals on July 12.
The teaser video did not reveal specific mechanics, choosing instead to float the concept of what a classic experience could mean. It featured League of Legends Executive Producer Paul “Pabro” Bellezza and League Studio Head Andrei “Meddler” van Roon in a creative skit discussing what the “good old days” meant for the game. They threw around references to different seasons and even brought up old-school items like Heart of Gold.
Exactly what Riot plans for League of Legends Classic remains to be seen but dataminers have already uncovered several features that could be part of the experience.
Unpacked files point to a dedicated progression system including its own battle pass, a summoner leveling system until level 30, a separate shop, and the return of Influence Points. Classic mechanics like the original Rune and Mastery systems also appear to be making a comeback, alongside a token system and a voting mechanic. Miners also initially found data for 59 champions but a recent video from an accidental PBE patch suggests the roster might actually feature over 60 playable old-style champions.
Between the official teaser and everything uncovered by dataminers, fans finally have confirmation that returning to an earlier era of League of Legends is no longer just wishful thinking.
