In 2024, the EarthCache™ program, a partnership between Geocaching HQ and the Geological Society of America, marked its 20th anniversary. The first EarthCache (GCHFT2) was placed in New South Wales, Australia in 2004.

Since then, thousands more have brought geocachers to awe-inspiring sites while sharing the wonders of Earth science. We asked the community to share some tips on how to get started with EarthCaches.

“Finding an EarthCache is not that different from solving a Mystery Cache. The difference is that instead of spending 10–15 minutes in front of your computer solving a puzzle, you’re spending 10–15 minutes outdoors answering questions.” – sgerbs

“I love EarthCaches! They are so cool. I loved my high school geology class, and I often use those basic principles I learned years ago. The best advice I can give is to watch the difficulty and terrain ratings for each EarthCache. Some require more work than others (just like with Traditionals and other cache types), but many only require you to take time and read the cache page to figure out what the cache owner is asking.” – Stevie B.

“As long as you try your best to answer all the questions, most cache owners (myself included) will allow you to log a find even if the answers are wrong. My number one pet peeve, however, is one-word answers that clearly do not show any attempt or interest in learning about the geology. At least write a sentence or two per question!” – bluesnote

“EarthCaches are my favorite cache type. I have found over 150 and now have 6 of my own, with a 7th in mind. I used to avoid them, but after my 9th EarthCache find (GC7BKD9), I was completely awestruck. Ninety-five percent of the time they take you to the most beautiful places and help you learn about the amazing earth we live on.” – Deanna K.

“Learn to use the “personal notes” option and use it to write a draft for the answers. You can even copy the whole questions section there and take notes.” – Robbie W.

“You don’t have to answer all questions fully in the field. You can take some photos and add the details at home later.” – Claire B.

“Visit your local library or bookshop for geology resources about the rocks and landscapes in your area!” – STNolan

“Don’t get frustrated if your reviewer asks you to research or add more details to your cache page. They’re just making sure the cache is accurate, educational, and meets the guidelines. Over time, you’ll start to anticipate what reviewers are looking for, and the process becomes much smoother.” – Josh B.
