Geocaching has a way of revealing the magical hidden layers of familiar places. Each step feels like the world is offering up a new secret. Often, geocachers report their discoveries of beautiful views or historic landmarks they didn’t know existed.

One such geocache, Echoes Beyond the Gate (GCAWZTF), is cleverly hidden in a unique feature of the West Virginia Botanic Garden, a peaceful sanctuary for wildlife and vibrant blooming flower species.

To get to Ground Zero (GZ), let a trail of mulch guide you through the peaceful botanical garden. As you round an otherwise ordinary corner, a majestic, arching stone-moon-gate welcomes geocachers with a framed path of stepping stones.

As you near the arch, take a closer look and notice the delightful details in the stonework. The left and right sides of the structure feature two designs built into the gate—one in the shape of a heart, while the other illustrates three dots with three lines beneath them, resembling upside-down exclamation marks.

Which compartment hides the prize? The approach to the arch may seem familiar, but the cache owner has a clever twist in store. One of these stones is not like the others and bears the key to the cache. With a sharp eye and some trial and error, one stone slides to the side on rails, and reveals the cavity that holds the esteemed log sheet.

Expect to find a small container; a bison tube is peacefully nestled behind the opening. Sign your name, slide the stone back into place, and leave the secret just as you found it.

Fun fact: The West Virginia Botanic Garden commissioned the custom stone feature to make a big splash at the 2025 GeoWoodstock. Now, that’s dedication to geocaching!
