Another Round of Cuts at Supermassive Games
After what felt like a pause on layoff headlines, here we go again. Supermassive Games has announced that it will begin a redundancy consultation that could affect up to 75 employees, with the studio describing the move as a necessary step to help ensure the company’s sustainability.
While that sounds like a broken record by now, with how the industry is going, there is really no other way to put it.
This latest wave of layoffs marks the third consecutive year Supermassive has done mass redundancies. In February 2024, the company had to let go of approximately 90 employees. Then, in July 2025, another 36 staff members were impacted. Unfortunately their most recent launch, Directive 8020, didn’t help turn things around. In fact, it didn’t do so well both critically and commercially.
It is an undeniably difficult situation for a studio that has a history of major success. The company has certainly had better launches, having created some of the most iconic games of our generation like Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Casting of Frank Stone.
Seeing a developer with such an established pedigree struggle to maintain its workforce year after year just proves how unforgiving the current gaming market is right now. Hopefully, the affected developers are able to land on their feet and find new opportunities soon.
